1st Max-Planck Advanced Course on the Foundations of Computer Science
Saarbrücken,
Germany, August 31- September 4, 2000
Saarbrücken is easily reachable because it is located on several main train and road routes.
Excellent international train information is available from a service by Hacon; you can also check the French Railway page.
Saarbrücken has its own international airport, Ensheim, but it may be more practical to use one of the big airports nearby: Frankfurt (the largest airport of Germany and one of the largest in Europe; serves all the big International Air Companies), Paris or Luxembourg and then take a direct train or bus.
It takes approximately 3.5 hours by train to reach Saarbrücken from Paris-Est (Gare de l' Est; there are regular connections) and approximately 2 hours from Luxembourg main train station (there are trains every hour).
From Frankfurt Airport itself there are frequent trains to Saarbrücken; the train trip takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach Saarbrücken (from the train station of the Airport) and costs approximately 70 (140) DM one way (round trip); check the international train information (use "Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbf." to get the train schedule of the airport station, because it is different from that of Frankfurt main station). At the web page of the airport ( http://www.frankfurt-airport.de/), besides many other useful items (e.g. car rental, meeting points, map of the airport area, flight info, assistance, etc.), you will also find detailed information about the Lufthansa bus to Saarbrücken, which is another option that you can use (you do not have to fly with Lufthansa Airlines in order to be able to take this bus). Of course, when you are at the airport, you will be able to get all this information at the information desks.
The hotels are in walking distance from the train station, but you can also take the city tram (Saar Bahn) in front of the station to Johanneskirche (second stop).
ADFOCS will be held in the building of Max-Planck Institut für Informatik , a piece of modern architecture with excellent facilities and a nice location in the University Campus. Information on reaching MPI can be found at http://www.mpi-sb.mpg.de/coordinates.html
From your hotel(s), the most convenient bus lines to use are 11 and 19 from Rathaus; this is ouside the main town hall and is clearly marked on the map of the center of Saarbrücken.
To go to MPI (building number 46 in the map of the University Campus ), where ADFOCS will take place, you need to get off at the bus-stops:
Uni Mensa, located next to building #42 in the map of the University Campus (for bus 11)
Uni Campus, located close to building #6 in the map of the University Campus (for bus 19); from there it is an extra 5-min walk to MPII's building.
More information, if needed, can be obtained via e-mail at <adfocs00@mpi-sb.mpg.de>.
